FLUSHING, NY, August 3, 2026 – The New York Mets have announced that they have acquired INF Sammy Stafura from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for RHP Luke Weaver and cash considerations.
Stafura, 21, has appeared in 60 games between High-A Greensboro and Class-A Bradenton, combining to slash .276/.367/.593 with 45 runs, 61 hits, eight doubles, one triple, 20 home runs, 54 RBI, 20 stolen bases and a .960 OPS. He is one of seven players in the minor leagues this season with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The Cortlandt, NY, has appeared in 284 games across four minor league seasons, hitting .250/.364/.427 with 182 runs, 45 doubles, 17 triples, 35 home runs, 174 RBI, 83 stolen bases and a .791 OPS.
The 6-foot, 188-pounder was originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. He was acquired by the Pirates as part of the package that sent INF Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Reds last year.
Weaver, 32, appeared in 42 games for the Mets this season, going 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA (9 ER/44.0 IP), 15 holds, one save, 45 strikeouts, 11 walks and a 0.82 WHIP. The right-handed pitcher signed a two-year contract as a free agent prior to the 2026 season.
