Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Colorado Rockies and Gold Crown Foundation, will host a free, one-day umpire camp at Coca-Cola All-Star Park in Lakewood, Colorado on Saturday, August 19th. Staff for the event will include many accomplished former MLB Umpires, current MLB Supervisors and Observers, as well as NCAA Officials. Among those participating from the MLB Umpiring Department will be Cris Jones, Tom Lepperd, Ed Montague, Ed Rapuano, Charlie Reliford and Rich Rieker.
This is MLB's fourth free, one-day umpire camp of 2017 for anyone interested in umpiring in baseball and softball, including those aiming to begin professional careers. The 2017 Umpire Camps will culminate with the MLBUC Professional Mini-Camp in Ft. Myers, Florida in December.
Twenty-seven attendees from last year's clinics went on to the MLB Professional Mini-Camp at no cost. Eight of the Ft. Myers attendees in 2016 advanced on MLB scholarships to the two professional umpire schools this past January, and five began their professional careers in June. Carlos Torres, who debuted in 2015, became a full-time Major League umpire this season, the first for a product of the MLBUC.
