SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have acquired left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray and cash considerations from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for right-handed pitcher Miguel Mendez and infielder Joniel Hernandez, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
Ray, 34, has posted a 10-6 record with a 3.08 ERA (42 ER, 122.2 IP) and 107 strikeouts against 57 walks across 22 appearances (21 starts) for the Giants this season. Over his last eight outings (7 GS) since June 16, he’s gone 6-0 with a 1.09 ERA (6 ER, 49.1 IP), .200 opponents average and a 1.14 WHIP. San Francisco is 14-8 in his 22 appearances this season, including wins in eight consecutive starts from May 24-July 4. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound left-hander has not missed a turn in the rotation due to injury since the 2024 season, making 54 consecutive appearances (53 starts) for the Giants since the start of 2025 (21-14 record, 3.42 ERA, .223 opp. AVG).
A 13-year Major League veteran and 2021 American League Cy Young Award winner, Ray has gone 98-87 with a 3.87 career ERA (673 ER, 1563.2 IP) and 1,841 strikeouts in 287 games (282 GS) between the Detroit Tigers (2014), Arizona Diamondbacks (2015-20), Toronto Blue Jays (2020-21), Seattle Mariners (2022-23) and Giants (2024-26). Since 2015, he ranks fourth among all qualifying pitchers in SO/9.0 IP (10.68), seventh in total strikeouts (1,822), 11th in games started (276), and 14th in innings pitched (1535.0). The Brentwood, Tenn. native is a two-time All-Star (2017, 2025) and was named to the All-MLB First Team during his 2021 AL Cy Young campaign.
