Padres announce Opening Day 25-man roster

The San Diego Padres have finalized their Opening Day 25-man roster, Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

The club has selected the contract of infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (will wear No. 23), designated right-handed pitcher Bryan Mitchell for assignment and optioned infielders Ty France, Jose Pirela and Luis Urías, right-hander Gerardo Reyes and left-hander Brad Wieck to Triple-A El Paso. 

In addition, right-handers Miguel Diaz (torn meniscus), Brett Kennedy (shoulder strain) and Jacob Nix (elbow strain) have been placed on the 10-day Injured List.

Yesterday, the club claimed outfielder Socrates Brito off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and placed outfielder Travis Jankowski (broken left wrist) on the 60-day IL. Brito will wear No. 11.

The Opening Day roster features seven right-handed pitchers, five left-handers, two catchers, five infielders and six outfielders. 10 players are making their first appearance on a Major League Opening Day roster, including Franchy Cordero, Eric Lauer, Joey Lucchesi, Phil Maton, Francisco Mejía, Chris Paddack, Franmil Reyes, Robert Stock, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Trey Wingenter. With today’s announcements, the Padres currently have a full 40-man roster.
