SAN DIEGO – The Padres and Padres Foundation, Xander Bogaerts and Urban Street Angels, announce the Padres 5-Tool Trade Academy, a trade school training program created for transition-aged youth experiencing homelessness and housing instability. The Padres Foundation funded a pilot program three years ago with Urban Street Angels, which has had great initial success. Since 2023, Urban Street Angels has served 93 transition-aged youth through this program. Nearly 80 percent of the participants achieved the primary outcomes of employment and independent housing, with 73 participants currently employed and living independently. Urban Street Angels anticipates serving 100 youth in 2026 based on continued demand and strong results.

Padres 5-tool shortstop Xander Bogaerts has committed funding along with the Padres Foundation to help the program reach more young adults at risk of homelessness and pave a future with job skills, employment, and secure housing. Bogaerts recently visited the facility, spent time touring the program, and connected directly with students who are building a lasting way out of homelessness.

Urban Street Angels offers the trade training program to transition-aged youth ages 18 to 25 experiencing homelessness and housing instability. The pilot program, which the Padres Foundation initially funded in 2023, was built to remove the barriers that typically prevent homeless young adults from completing vocational education. Participants receive full wraparound support, including tuition, books, housing, transportation, and meals, in addition to hands-on guidance from intake through graduation. Individuals can choose from over 20 different trades or paths in a wide variety of fields such as medical, cosmetology and culinary arts. The Padres Foundation and Urban Street Angels rebranded the program to the Padres 5-Tool Trade Academy as a nod to the five tools in baseball—contact, power, speed, glove and arm—that help a player succeed on the baseball diamond, and because the Academy gives students every tool they need to build a future.
