SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced the return of their annual alumni softball game with the 2019 edition set for Thursday, June 6 when a team of Padres Alumni will take on a team of U.S. Navy All-Stars on Field #4 at Naval Base San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 11:40 a.m. with notable Padres Alumni participants to include Randy Jones, Heath Bell, Andy Ashby, Tony Gwynn Jr., Tim Stauffer, Brett Tomko, Carlos Hernandez and Clay Hensley among others. The U.S. Navy All-Stars will be comprised of sailors from various commands stationed onboard Naval Base San Diego.
“Since its inception in 2017, the annual alumni softball game has been a great opportunity to express our gratitude to these men and women for their service to our country,” said Padres Sr. Vice President of Community & Military Affairs Tom Seidler. “We look forward to returning to Naval Base San Diego and continuing to forge the bond between our club and the local military community through these types of events.”
“Naval Base San Diego is excited about having the Padres Alumni team back to play our NAVY All-Star Team! This will be a great event for our warriors and their families. We are thankful for the opportunity to come together and strengthen the bonds between our favorite baseball team and our great Sailors,” said Capt. Roy Love, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego.
Rules for the six-inning game will include the use of a designated hitter, a pitch ceiling of 10 feet and a five-run maximum per inning. The U.S. Navy All-Stars will be managed by Personnel Specialist First Class Robert E. Lee III. Padres public address announcer Alex Miniak will also be on-hand to provide live play-by-play commentary of the game. Sailors on base, along with their families, will be treated to Hodad’s hamburgers, kids activities, giveaways, live entertainment and a meet and greet with current Padres players, as well as members of the Padres Alumni team. The Padres and Naval Base San Diego will also be hosting over 200 kids from local school districts throughout San Diego including Santee, La Mesa/Spring Valley and Cajon Valley to enjoy the day’s festivities. The event is closed to the public and only open to active duty sailors and their families.
More information on the Padres’ military initiatives can be found on the club’s dedicated military website, www.padres.com/military, which serves as a tool to connect Padres fans to our San Diego military community and the non-profit organizations that support it.
