Pirates sign four more players from 2019 Draft

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following players from the 2019 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Joe DelliCarri, Pirates Senior Director of Amateur Scouting.

Hit .322 (67-for-208) with 12 doubles, 12 home runs and 52 RBI in 57 games as a junior at Stanford in 2019…Also went 6-2 with one save, a 3.71 ERA (53.1ip/22er) and 55 strikeouts in 15 appearances (eight starts) on the mound…Was named to the 2019 Pac-12 all-conference team as a pitcher/infielder…Became the seventh player to be selected by the Pirates out of Stanford…Was a finalist for the John Olerud Award, which is annually awarded to the best two-way player in college baseball.

21 Alex Roth RHP 6-4/220 Western Oregon University Bristol

Went 7-0 with a 2.35 ERA (61.1ip/16er) and 87 strikeouts in 11 starts as a junior in 2019...Was named to the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) All-American team in 2019...Also earned ABCA/Rawlings, NCBWA, D2CCA (Conference Commissioners Association) All-West Region and All-GNAC (Great Northwest Athletic Conference) honors…Was named the GNAC Pitcher-of-the-Year in both 2018 and 2019...Was the Co-GNAC Pitcher-of-the-Year and a first-team All-GNAC selection after leading the conference with a 3.77 ERA in 2017.

34 Dylan Shockley C 5-10/215 University of Rio Grande (OH) GCL Pirates

Hit .373 (81-for-217) with 23 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 46 RBI in 60 games this past season at the University of Rio Grande, located in southeastern Ohio…Posted the highest batting average (.373) in the River States Conference in 2019…Was a 2018 NAIA All-American second-team selection.

37 CJ Dandeneau RHP 6-0/210 University of Connecticut GCL Pirates

Went 4-2 with one save, a 2.52 ERA (50.0ip/14er) and 68 strikeouts in 31 appearances in 2019…Was named the Most Improved Player in the New England Collegiate Baseball League during the summer of 2018 while posting a 1.22 ERA…Was named the South Division’s closer for the All-Star Game in the summer of 2018 while playing in the NECBL.

The Pirates have now signed 29 players from the 2019 draft.
