A’s Announce Promotions for Schulman and Collins

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s named Brian Schulman as director of sports medicine and rehabilitation and Jeff Collins as head athletic trainer, the club announced today.

Schulman will oversee all aspects of the medical and sport performance departments at both the Major League level and within player development as he begins his 13th season with the A’s. He joined the A’s organization in 2011 as an assistant athletic trainer and will continue with those duties. Schulman also sits on the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) electronic medical records committee and was one of the recipients of the 2012 PBATS President’s Distinguished Service award and was also recognized by his peers in 2019 as a member of the Oakland A’s PBATS Major League Athletic Training Staff of the Year award. Before joining the A’s, Schulman was an assistant athletic trainer at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2004-08 before being promoted to rehabilitation coordinator from 2008-10. He also served previous internships with the San Francisco 49ers in 2003-04 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000, as well as being a graduate assistant trainer at Fresno State in 2001-03.

Collins will begin his 26th season in the A’s organization in 2023, his first as the head athletic trainer for the Major League team. He has spent the last six seasons as an assistant athletic trainer for the A’s. Collins also worked for 19 years in the A’s farm system as an athletic trainer with Southern Oregon (1998-99), Visalia (2000) and Vancouver (2004), and the balance as the A’s minor league medical coordinator. He earned PBATS Coordinator of the Year honors in 2014 and 2016 and was recognized by his peers in 2019 as a member of the Oakland A’s PBATS Major League Athletic Training Staff of the Year award. Since 2011, Collins has served as an athletic trainer for the ESPN Winter X Games.
