OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s will honor longtime sportswriter Bruce Jenkins with the 2022 Ron Bergman Award on Saturday, Aug. 27, ahead of the team’s 6:07 p.m. matchup versus the New York Yankees. 

Jenkins started working at The San Francisco Chronicle in 1973 and began covering the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants in 1977. He was a beat writer for the A’s during Oakland’s “Billy Ball'' years. He has covered 27 World Series, 19 Wimbledons, and many other major events, including the Super Bowl, World Cup soccer, NBA Finals, four major golf tournaments, and U.S. Open tennis championships. 

Jenkins was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1992 and 2002, and he has authored several books, including a book about his father in the music business. He is currently one of three baseball writers on the Career Excellence Award ballot for 2023. The annual award, voted on by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, honors one writer every year “for meritorious contributions to baseball writing” and is presented during the Hall of Fame ceremonies in Cooperstown. 

The Ron Bergman Award, named after its inaugural winner, was established by the A’s in 2019 and is given annually to honor a journalist for their meritorious contributions to the coverage of the Athletics. National sportswriter Pedro Gomez was the 2021 award recipient.
