A’s Reinstate RHP Mason Miller from Injured List; Select LHP Easton Lucas and Recall RHP Devin Sweet from Las Vegas
LHP Sam Long and RHP Zach Neal optioned to Las Vegas; RHP Spencer Patton designated for assignment
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s reinstated RHP Mason Miller from the injured list, selected left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas and recalled right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. In addition, left-handed pitcher Sam Long and right-handed pitcher Zach Neal were optioned to Las Vegas, and right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton was designated for assignment.
Miller made his Major League debut on April 19 and made four starts with the A’s before being placed on the injured list on May 8 with right forearm tightness. He was 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 21.1 innings with 22 strikeouts and just seven walks across those starts. The right-hander made five rehab appearances with Stockton and Las Vegas, four of which were scoreless. Overall he accrued a 1.69 ERA, striking out 16 and walking five over 10.2 innings.
Lucas was acquired from the Orioles for right-handed pitcher Shintaro Fujinami on July 9 and will be making his Major League debut. Originally drafted by Miami out of Pepperdine University in 2019, the 26-year-old left-hander is 1-0 with one save and a 3.86 ERA in 36 games with Double-A Bowie, Triple-A Norfolk, and Las Vegas this season.
Sweet was claimed off waivers from Seattle on Saturday. He pitched twice for the Mariners this season in his Major League debut, allowing two runs on two hits over 2.0 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander is 4-1 with five saves and a 2.30 ERA in 35 games with Double-Arkansas, Triple-A Tacoma, and Las Vegas this season. He struck out 56 and walked 11.
Long was recalled from Las Vegas on Sept.1 as rosters expanded and appeared in two games with the A’s, allowing four runs (three earned) in 2.0 innings. Overall this season, he is 0-1 with two saves and a 5.60 ERA in 40 games for the A’s. He was acquired from San Francisco on April 23 and pitched in 38 games before he was optioned to Las Vegas on Aug. 12. The 28-year-old left-hander pitched in five games for the Aviators and compiled a 1.35 ERA, allowing a run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight in 6.2 innings.
Neal was selected from Las Vegas on Aug. 3 for his second stint with the club this season. He allowed three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out three in 3.1 innings in two games during his first stint from May 11-14 and 18 runs (16 earned) in 19.0 innings over eight games, including two starts, in his second stint. On Aug. 25, he earned his first Major League win since 2016.
Patton was selected from Las Vegas on Aug. 21 for his second stint with the A’s. In four games in May, he logged a 6.75 ERA in 5.1 innings pitched with Oakland, and he allowed three runs over 7.0 innings in eight games in his second stint.
