Astros acquire C Luke Berryhill from Reds via trade

Acquire young catcher in exchange for LHP Cionel Perez

HOUSTON, TX - The Astros have acquired catcher Luke Berryhill from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for LHP Cionel Perez, General Manager James Click announced today.

Berryhill, 22, last appeared in game action in 2019, appearing in eight games for Greeneville (.240, 25 AB, 6 H, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, .744 OPS). He did not appear in any games in 2020 due to the pandemic-caused cancellation of the minor league season. Berryhill was selected by the Reds in the 13th round of the 2019 First Year Player Draft after starring at the University of South Carolina. In 56 games for the Gamecocks in 2019, he hit .271 with 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 49 RBI while posting a .538 slugging pct. (.920 OPS).

Perez, 24, appeared in seven games for the Astros big club in 2020, all in relief. He was 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA in his 6.1 innings of work (6 BB, 8 SO). Perez has appeared in 20 Major League games overall over the past three seasons for the Astros (1-1, 5.75 ERA, 26.2 IP, 15 BB, 27 SO).
