Astros announce July Minor League Players of the Month

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros player development department has named its July Players of the Month, which are as follows:

FULL SEASON

  • July Player of the Month: SS Jeremy Peña
  • July Pitcher of the Month: RHP Jojanse Torres

SHORT SEASON

  • July Player of the Month: C Nate Perry
  • July Pitcher of the Month: RHP Jairo Lopez

Peña, 21, batted .352 (31x88) with 14 runs scored, nine doubles, three triples, two homers, 10 RBI and a .967 OPS (.376 OBP/.591 SLG) in 23 July games with Class A Advanced Fayetteville. The Astros third-round selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, Peña ranked among the top-five hitters in the Carolina League during the month of July in doubles (T-1st), extra-base hits (T-1st), slugging percentage (2nd), OPS (2nd), triples (3rd), hits (4th) and batting average (4th). Currently ranked by MLB.com as the Astros No. 9 prospect, Peña was named a Class A Midwest League Midseason All-Star earlier this year. In 92 combined games between Fayetteville (26g) and Class A Quad Cities (66g) this season, he has hit .308 with 17 doubles, seven triples, seven homers, 52 RBI and an .846 OPS (.386 OBP/.460 SLG).

Torres, 24, went 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA (6ER/28IP) and 29 strikeouts in five games in July (4 starts) for Fayetteville. Torres was scoreless over his final 13.0 innings pitched in July, which included a 7.0-inning, one-hit complete game shutout on July 24 vs. Lynchburg that garnered him Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors. The right-hander led all Carolina League pitchers in wins during July, while ranking ninth in strikeouts. On the season, Torres has gone 8-0 with a 2.00 ERA (16ER/72IP), 87 strikeouts and a .175 opponent batting average in 19 games (8 starts) between Fayetteville (12g) and Class A Quad Cities (7g).

Perry, 20, swatted six doubles, one triple, three homers and 18 RBI to go along with a .256 batting average (23x90), .402 on-base percentage and .444 slugging percentage (.846 OPS) during 27 July games with Class A Short Season Tri-City. A fifth-round pick by the Astros in the 2017 MLB Draft, Perry was named the New York-Penn League Player of the Week for the week of July 9-15 after batting .360 with a .500 OBP, three doubles and two home runs across seven games. During the month of July, the backstop led the New York-Penn League in walks (21) while ranking sixth in on-base percentage, ninth in slugging percentage and 10th in OPS.
