Astros to promote prospect Joey Loperfido on April 30

Corresponding roster move to be announced prior to tomorrow night’s game

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros will promote prospect Joey Loperfido to their Major League roster prior to tomorrow night’s game. The corresponding roster move will be announced at the time of his activation. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Dana Brown.

Loperfido, 24, was off to a strong start to the 2024 season at Triple A Sugar Land, where he was hitting .287 (29x101) with 13 home runs, 27 RBI and a 1.106 OPS in 25 games for the Space Cowboys. Loperfido currently leads all of minor league baseball in home runs, total bases (72) and runs scored (31), while ranking tied for third in extra-base hits (17), fifth in slugging (.713) and tied for sixth in RBI. Loperfido also had a strong Spring Training with the Astros, in which he hit .382 (13x34) with five doubles, a triple, seven RBI and a 1.076 OPS in 18 games.

Loperfido, a left-handed hitting outfielder and first baseman, currently ranks as the Astros No. 6 prospect per MLB.com. He was originally a seventh-round pick by the Astros out of Duke in the June 2021 Draft. He’s played parts of four seasons in the Astros minor league system, including a strong 2023 campaign when he was named the Astros Minor League Player of the Year.

When Loperfido is activated tomorrow, the Astros will make a corresponding move to their 26-man active roster and to their 40-man roster, which is currently full.

Additionally, following yesterday’s game, the Astros returned IF/OF Trey Cabbage to Triple A Sugar Land. He served as the Astros 27th man for the Mexico City Series.
