Brock Holt to be honored at Fenway Park tonight as club celebrates 18th annual Roberto Clemente Day at Fenway Park

Holt Named Red Sox Nominee for 2019 Roberto Clemente Award

September 18th, 2019

BOSTON, MA – Red Sox infielder/outfielder Brock Holt will be honored during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park tonight, Wednesday, September 18, marking the 18th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which pays tribute to the 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer’s legacy. Clemente died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Holt was recently named a 2019 nominee by Major League Baseball for the Roberto Clemente Award, a recognition given to a player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. This is the second year in a row that Holt has been nominated for the award.

Since arriving in Boston, Holt has supported the Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation’s charitable efforts, continuously leading the team in community appearances, including meet-and-greets with fans, baseball clinics with kids, and the donation of unique experiences for Red Sox Foundation auctions.

Holt is best known for his close relationship with the Jimmy Fund and helping to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with its mission to raise funds for adult and pediatric cancer care and research. He was first introduced to the Jimmy Fund in 2013 when he met patients at the clinic during his rookie development training. Holt has been an advocate and ambassador for the charity in his role as Red Sox Jimmy Fund Captain since 2015, and for the past two seasons he has had a ticket program, “Brock Stars,” that hosts Jimmy Fund patients and families at Fenway Park every Tuesday home game.

Earlier this month, Holt and his wife Lakyn launched a campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Jimmy Fund during the month of September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The Holts created special #BrockingOutCancer t-shirts featuring a gold ribbon, the symbol for childhood cancer awareness, and other icons that are meaningful to their family. The t-shirts are available through September 30 by clicking here

In 2015, Holt was named the BoSox Club’s “Man of the Year,” and in 2016, he received the Tim Wakefield Community Service Award at the Boston Baseball Writer’s Dinner.

The Roberto Clemente Award winner will be selected by a panel that includes Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., representatives from MLB-affiliated networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN and TBS) and MLB Advanced Media, as well as Roberto’s late wife Vera Clemente. Fan voting for the award winner is open now through the end of the regular season, Sunday, September 29, on mlb.com/clemente21.
