Cubs activate RHP Carl Edwards Jr.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. off of the 10-day injured list. Left-handed pitcher Randy Rosario has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Edwards will be available for the Cubs this afternoon when they begin their three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field.

Edwards, 27, was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 13 (retroactive to June 10) with a left thoracic strain. He has gone 1-1 with four holds and a 5.40 ERA (9 ER/15.0 IP) in 19 relief outings for the Cubs this season. Edwards made four rehab outings with Iowa as part of his return, combining to toss 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run. He most recently pitched on Tuesday, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in one inning (18 pitches) vs. Oklahoma City.

The righthander began the 2019 campaign with the Cubs, was optioned to Iowa on April 6 and recalled to Chicago on May 6. Since his recall, he had gone 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA (3 ER/13.1 IP) in 15 relief outings, fanning 15 and walking only three in 13.1 innings while limiting foes to a .093 batting average with a 0.52 WHIP, before being placed on the injured list. 

Edwards Jr. has spent all or part of the last four seasons in the majors with the Cubs, going 9-8 with two saves and a 3.26 ERA (63 ER/174.0 IP) in 191 relief outings, fanning 234 batters in 174.0 innings while limiting opponents to a .151 batting average. Edwards Jr. went 3-2 with a 2.60 ERA (15 ER/52.0 IP) in 58 relief outings last year.

Rosario, 25, has gone 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA (7 ER/10.2 IP) in 13 relief appearances with the Cubs this season. He is 0-2 with four saves and a 2.25 ERA (5 ER/20.0 IP) in 18 relief outings with Iowa this year.
