D-backs agree to terms with Tyler Clippard on a 1-year contract; reinstate Luis Frías from the injured list; designate LHP Travis Bergen and RHP Keury Mella for assignment

The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with RHP Tyler Clippard on a 1-year contract with a mutual option for 2022, reinstated RHP Luis Frías from the injured list and designated LHP Travis Bergen and RHP Keury Mella for assignment.

Clippard, 36, returns for his second stint with the D-backs, having appeared in 40 games in 2016. The 2-time National League All-Star (2011, ’14) ranks among active relievers [stats as reliever only] in innings (1st, 795.1), games (2nd, 763), holds (2nd, 223), strikeouts (4th, 896), opponent average (7th, .193), opponent OBP (8th, .274) and ERA (12th, 2.95).

The 6-foor-3, 200-pounder appeared in 26 games (2 starts) with the Twins last season, going 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA (8 ER in 26.0 IP), .202 opponent average, 0.88 WHIP, 26 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Clippard enters his 15th season in 2021, having played for the Yankees (2007, ’16-17), Nationals (‘08-14), A’s (‘15), Mets (’15), D-backs (’16), White Sox (’17), Astros (’17), Blue Jays (’18), Indians (’19) and Twins (’20). In 777 career games (14 starts), he is 55-47 with 68 saves, a 3.13 ERA, .197 opponent average, 1.10 WHIP, 931 strikeouts and 329 walks.

He has 14 relief appearances in 3 postseasons (2012 and ’14 with the Nationals,’15 with the Mets).

Frías, 22, was placed on the injured list on Feb. 21.

Bergen, 27, appeared in 7 games for the D-backs last season.

Mella, 27, appeared in 11 games for the D-backs last season.
