D-backs Award Daulton Varsho, Chester Pimentel With Monthly Honors

PHOENIX —The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) named Double-A Jackson C/OF Daulton Varsho (@DaultonVarsho25) and Single-A Kane County RHP Chester Pimentel the organization’s Minor League Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Month for August.

Varsho, 23, hit .391 (36-for-92)/.436 OBP/.707 SLG with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 17 RBI, 8 walks and 26 runs scored in 24 games for Double-A Jackson. He led the Southern League in average, runs, total bases (65), slugging pct. and OPS (1.143), while ranking among SL leaders in hits (T-1st), home runs (T-3rd), triples (T-3rd), OBP (4th), doubles (T-7th) and RBI (T-10th). Varsho reached base safely in 21 of 24 games last month, including a 14-game on-base streak from August 9-26. He took home SL Player-of-the-Week honors for the week of August 11 and was later named a Postseason All-Star. A native of Chili, Wis., Varsho was selected by the D-backs in the Competitive Balance B round of the 2017 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Pimentel, 23, went 0-1 with 2 saves, a 0.86 ERA (2 ER in 21.0 IP), 0.76 WHIP, .159 opponent average and 30 strikeouts in 7 appearances for Kane County. He ranked among the Midwest League leaders ERA (4th), WHIP (4th) and opponent average (6th) [min. 20.0 IP]. Pimentel opened the month with a 10.2-inning scoreless streak. A native of Villa Fundacion, D.R., Pimentel was signed by the D-backs as a non-drafted free agent October 3, 2014.

 Every month during the season, the D-backs’ Player Development staff chooses the player and pitcher most deserving of the honors based on nominations from coaches at each affiliate along with input from the Minor League coordinators.
