SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that right-handed pitcher David McKay has been claimed off waivers by Detroit.

McKay, 24, appeared in 7 games with the Mariners this season, posting a 5.14 ERA (4 ER, 7.0 IP) with 8 walks and 5 strikeouts during 3 stints with the club. He was last with the Mariners from July 6-15, appearing in 2 games and allowing 3 earned runs in 2.0 innings on 1 hit (1 home run) and 5 walks. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on May 20 at Texas and appeared in 5 games with Seattle from May 19-31, allowing 1 ER in 5.0 IP during that span. He was also on Seattle’s roster March 30-April 1, but did not appear in a game. McKay has spent the majority of the season with AAA Tacoma. With Tacoma this season, McKay went 3-1, 5.15 (25 ER, 43.2 IP) with 31 walks and 71 strikeouts in 30 relief appearances. He is 0-1 with a 15.19 ERA (9 ER, 5.1 IP) in 6 games since rejoining Tacoma on July 15.
McKay was originally acquired in a minor league trade with Kansas City on March 20, 2018. He pitched at three levels of the Mariners farm system last season, making stops at High-A Modesto (6 G), Triple-A Tacoma (1 G) and Double-A Arkansas (35 G). In total, he has appeared in 4 minor league seasons with Kansas City (2016-17) and Seattle (2018-19), going 18-11 with a 4.81 ERA (126 ER, 236 IP) with 91 walks and 276 strikeouts in 104 career games (19 starts).
