Dodgers Foundation and  76® team up to fuel access to STEM education in Los Angeles

September 28th, 2021

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 28, 2021) – The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) and 76® are teaming up to fuel access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Los Angeles. This collaboration, which launches the final week of baseball’s regular season, will help LADF, in partnership with Science of Sport continue to provide and expand its hands-on STEM curriculum and programming to elementary and middle-school teachers and students in local underserved communities.

Fans can support this initiative by texting FUEL to 41623 or by visiting the LADF Homebase in the Centerfield Plaza at Dodger Stadium during the Dodgers’ upcoming homestand. The first 1,000 fans to donate $76 or more will receive six collectible 76® and Dodger pins: a new limited-edition pin featuring Smilin’ Jack in a Dodger jersey in a set along with five previous designs.

Fans who donate in person at Dodger Stadium will also receive additional giveaways, including a bag of caramel popcorn. Fans can also support the effort by participating in a special online auction from Sept. 27-Oct. 5 at Dodgers.com/Auctions, which will feature autographed Dodger player memorabilia, including game-worn jerseys from the Diamondbacks series this season. Fans can also support by entering LADF’s 50/50 Raffle on Saturday, Oct. 2, from which 50% of the pot will benefit STEM programming. 76® will provide matching funds for the entire campaign up to $76,000.

“We are thrilled to team up with 76 to make this limited-edition pin available,” said Nichol Whiteman, CEO of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. “It is our hope that Dodger fans join us in this collaboration that will allow us the opportunity to provide the gift of STEM education to thousands more youth.”

As part of its continued commitment to improving education, LADF’s STEM curriculum was developed through a grant to Science of Sport to educate young people and spark curiosity in these subjects. LADF’s Science of Baseball program works to address the inequities that exist for Black, Latino and female students by partnering with schools in communities that need it most. To date, over 90 teachers have been trained from Los Angeles Unified School District, Inglewood Unified School District and Compton Unified School District, serving 9,000 students. The LADF Science of Baseball curriculum utilizes baseball examples to improve student interest and performance in STEM. This curriculum has been designed for 3rd-8th grades.

“We’re excited to work with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation this year, fueling a cause important to the Los Angeles community,” said Rod Palmer, GM Branded Marketing at Phillips 66 Company. “As a long-time sponsor of the Dodgers, we’re proud to be a part of LADF’s important work in STEM education.”

76®, a sponsor of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 1962, is passionate about supporting the communities they are a part of, including its collaboration with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. 76® was an original sponsor of the Dodgers and the brand remains a strong presence at Dodger Stadium with its iconic 76® balls sitting atop the Dodger Stadium scoreboards and its landmark service station in Lot 6 continuing to be used as an event space.

LADF has also teamed up with the Phillips 66 Los Angeles Refinery and 76® gas stations to give the iconic Smilin’ Jack a Dodgers spin this year. In addition to his jack-o’-lantern smile, the 3-million-gallon storage tank will sport LADF decals and one additional tank will don a Dodger jersey to show their support for their favorite team. The community can visit Smilin’ Jack in person at a drive-through Halloween event at the Phillips 66 Refinery on Oct. 28-29 from 6-9 p.m. For more details, follow @76 on social channels.

“We are excited to turn this Halloween tradition into a fundraising opportunity that will support our local STEM education programs,” said, Juliana Moreno Public Affairs and Community Relations Advisor of the Phillips 66 Los Angeles Refinery.

About the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation

The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation is bigger than baseball with ambitions to be the city’s premier charity. We envision a city where everyone regardless of zip code has the opportunity to thrive. We are tackling the most pressing problems facing Los Angeles with a mission to improve education, health care, homelessness and social justice for all Angelenos. Since 1995, we have invested more than $32 million in programs and grants to nonprofits, and fundraising has increased by 1,000% since 2012. That growth has enabled us to do more.

In 2020, LADF was awarded ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year, Beyond Sport's Sport for Reduced Racial Inequalities Collective Impact Award, and the Aspen Institute Project Play Champion.
