Dodgers Select RHP Dustin May, Recall RHP Tony Gonsolin
RHP Dylan Floro Optioned, LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu Placed on IL
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Dustin May and have recalled right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin from Triple-A Oklahoma City. In order to make room on the 25-man roster, Los Angeles optioned right-handed pitcher Dylan Floro to Triple-A and placed left-handed pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 10-day injured list with neck soreness, retroactive to August 1. In order to make room on the 40-man roster for May, the Dodgers transferred left-handed pitcher Scott Alexander to the 60-day injured list with left forearm inflammation.
May, 21, was originally selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Northwest High School (Tx.). He has been with the organization for four seasons, posting a combined 24-17 record with a 3.50 ERA (157 ER/403.2 IP) and 394 strikeouts. The Dodgers 2018 Minor League Pitcher of the Year has split the season between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, going a combined 6-5 with a 3.38 ERA (40 ER/106.2 IP) and 110 strikeouts. On Monday, he was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week, going 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12.0 IP) while striking out 10 hitters from July 22 through July 28.
Gonsolin, 25, returns for his third stint with the club after recording his first career save on Tuesday night. He has pitched 8.0 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) with six strikeouts in his previous two stops with the Dodgers, including 4.0 innings of one-run baseball with three strikeouts against the Colorado Rockies for his first save. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he has made 12 starts, posting a 1-4 record with a 4.95 ERA (20 ER/36.1 IP) and 41 strikeouts.
Floro, 28, was activated from the injured list on Wednesday afternoon and appeared in one game since his activation (1.0 IP, 0 R, 2 BB). The former Cal State Fullerton Titan is 4-3 with a 4.00 ERA (16 ER/36.0 IP) and 30 strikeouts in 38 games this season. In 67 games since joining the Dodgers, Floro is 7-4 with a 2.97 ERA (21 ER/63.2 IP) and 61 strikeouts.
Ryu, 32, will make his second trip to the injured list this season after missing 11 games from April 9 through April 20 with a left groin strain. The All-Star is 11-2 with a 1.53 ERA (23 ER/135.2 IP) and 117 strikeouts this season. He is among the Major League leaders in ERA (1st), winning percentage (2nd, .846), strikeouts-to-walk ratio (2nd, 7.31), WHIP (2nd, 0.94), opponents on-base percentage (2nd, .248) and slugging percentage (4th, .329). The South Korea native is coming off one of best months of his career, in which he posted a 2-0 record with a 0.55 ERA ( 2 ER/32.2 IP) and 23 strikeouts in five July starts. He was awarded National League Pitcher of the Month for May after going 5-0 with a 0.59 ERA (3 ER/45.2 IP) and 26 strikeouts.
Alexander, 29, was placed on the IL on June 11 after appearing in 28 games and going 3-2 with a 3.36 ERA (7 ER/17.1 IP) and nine strikeouts. Since joining Los Angeles in 2018, he has posted a 5-3 mark with a 3.67 ERA (34 ER/83.1 IP) and 65 strikeouts. He is in his fifth Major League season and has a 10-7 overall record with a 3.20 ERA (63 ER/177.1 IP).
