CHICAGO – Class AAA Charlotte outfielder Luis Robert has been named the Chicago White Sox Minor League Player of the Month for July, his third monthly honor in 2019, and Class AA Birmingham left-hander Matt Tomshaw has been named Pitcher of the Month as voted by a panel of Chicago-area media members.
Robert, 21, batted .330 (32-97) with five doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 17 RBI, 10 stolen bases, 28 runs scored, a .400 on-base percentage, .660 slugging percentage and 1.060 OPS over 23 games in July between Birmingham and Charlotte. He was promoted to the Knights on July 9, hitting safely in his first seven games with Charlotte. Robert recorded an 11-game hitting streak from July 2-18, going 13-30 (.433) with three doubles, one triple, six homers, 13 RBI, 15 runs scored and seven steals during that span.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Robert, who is rated by MLBPipeline.com as the No. 5 prospect in baseball, is hitting .349 (132-378) with 25 doubles, nine triples, 22 homers, 68 RBI, 34 steals, 86 runs scored, a .405 on-base and .638 slugging percentage over 93 games between Class A Winston-Salem, Birmingham and Charlotte this season. A native of Guantánamo, Cuba, Robert signed with the Sox as an international free agent on May 27, 2017.
Tomshaw, 30, went 1-1 with a 1.07 ERA (4 ER/33.2 IP), 41 strikeouts, a .180 (22-243) opponents average and 0.74 WHIP over five starts in July for the Barons. He threw 25.2 consecutive scoreless IP over his five starts. Tomshaw threw 7.0 IP in four straight starts from July 8-28.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Tomshaw has gone a combined 6-6 with a 3.16 ERA (29 ER/82.2 IP), 91 strikeouts and a .248 (80-322) opponents average in 21 games (12 starts) between Charlotte and Birmingham this season.
