Mariners reinstate RHP Brandon Brennan from 10-day injured list; Reinstate INF Tim Lopes from 7-day concussion list

RHP Gerson Bautista optioned to AAA Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

• Brandon Brennan, RHP, returned from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and reinstated from the 10-day Injured List. • Tim Lopes, INF, returned from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and reinstated from the 7-day Concussion List. • Gerson Bautista, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Brennan (#65) and Lopes (#10) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the San Diego Padres at T-Mobile Park.

Brennan, 28, was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a strained right shoulder on July 14. He was placed on a rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners on July 12, making a start that day vs. the AZL Royals and striking out 3 while allowing 3 unearned runs in 1.0 inning. On July 15, his rehab assignment was transferred to Triple-A Tacoma where he went 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA (1 ER, 7.2 IP) while striking out 9 and walking 4 in 8 relief appearances. In 30 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, he is 2-6 with a 5.56 earned run average (21 ER, 34.0 IP). He made his MLB debut March 21 vs. Oakland in Tokyo, did not allow an earned run in his first 8 Major League appearances, and notched his first Big League win on April 11 at Kansas City, tossing a 1-2-3 inning.

Brennan was selected by Seattle in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 13, 2018. He was originally selected by Chicago-AL in the 4th round of the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft. He spent seven years (2012-2018) in the White Sox minor league system and was a combined 25-34 with a 4.64 ERA (249 ER, 482.2 IP) with 16 saves in 172 games (64 starts). Brennan signed with Colorado as a minor league free agent on Nov. 13, 2018 but was selected by Seattle prior to joining the Rockies.

Lopes, 25, was placed on the 7-day Concussion List on July 26 after being hit in the head by a pitch in the bottom of the 4th inning on July 25 vs. Detroit. He was placed on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 2 and went 5-for-16 (.313) with 1 run scored, 1 double, 1 walk and 2 stolen bases in 4 games with the Rainiers. He made his Major League debut as a defensive replacement on July 24 vs. Texas and made his first big league start on July 25 vs. Detroit. In 2 games with the Mariners, he is 0-for-1 with 1 run scored, 1 HBP, 1 walk and 1 stolen base. Prior to being selected from Tacoma on July 23, he hit .302 (108x358) with 58 runs, 30 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 60 RBI, 35 walks, 24 stolen bases, a .362 on-base percentage and a .480 slugging percentage (.843 OPS) in 91 games with the Rainiers this season.

Lopes was originally selected by the Mariners in the 6th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Edison High School in Huntington Beach, CA. The native of Los Angeles spent the first 5 seasons of his professional career in the Mariners organization. On Sept. 30, 2016, he was sent to Toronto as a Player to Be Named Later completing a trade made on Aug. 6, 2016 in which the Mariners acquired switch-handed pitcher Pat Venditte from the Blue Jays. Lopes spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons in the Blue Jays organization before signing with Seattle as a minor league free agent on Nov. 14, 2018. He has appeared in parts of 8 minor league seasons with Seattle (2012-16, 2019-c) and Toronto (2017-18).

Bautista, 24, has made two stints with the Mariners this season (6/5 – 6/22 and 7/31 – 8/6), going 0-1 with an 11.00 ERA (11 ER, 9.0 IP) with 9 walks and 7 strikeouts in 8 appearances, including 2 outings as an opener. He was placed on the 10-day Injured List on March 18 (retroactive to March 17) with a right pectoralis strain. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 27 and reinstated from the IL on June 5. He appeared on a rehab assignment with High-A Modesto (0-0, 4.50 in 3 games / 2 ER, 4.0 IP) and AAA Tacoma (0-0, with 1 save and a 2.57 ERA in 5 games / 2 ER, 7.0 IP).

The Mariners acquired Bautista (along with Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn) from the Mets on Dec. 3, 2018. He made his MLB debut in 2018 with New York (NL) in 2018, appearing in 5 games, and posting an 0-1 mark with a 12.46 ERA (6 ER, 4.1 IP). In parts of six minor league seasons in the Boston, New York-NL and Seattle minor league systems, he holds a combined 13-12 record with 19 saves and a 3.42 ERA (106 ER, 278.2 IP). He has struck out 9.2 batters per 9.0 innings pitched in his minor league career (284 SO, 278.2 IP).
