FLUSHING, N.Y., July 24, 2021 – The New York Mets today announced the team has acquired outfielder Mark Payton from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations. Payton will be optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. In addition, the Mets transferred LHP David Peterson to the 60-Day Injured List.
Payton, 29, appeared in 24 games with the Reds this season, going 4-22 (.182) with two runs scored. The left-handed hitter played in eight games with Cincinnati in 2020, going 3-18 (.167).
The 5-8, 180-pounder was slashing .281/.331/.446 at Triple-Louisville this year. He had seven doubles, two triples, four homers, 14 RBI, four stolen bases and 19 runs scored in 35 games.
Payton, who was designated for assignment on July 19, has slashed .285/.361/.455 in 601 career minor league games. He was selected by the Yankees in the seventh round in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.
