Mets claim catcher Deivy Grullón

FLUSHING, N.Y., April 28, 2021 -- The New York Mets have announced today that the club has claimed catcher Deivy Grullón (DAY-vee grew-YOHN) off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. He was optioned to the Alternate Site. The Mets now have 40 players on their 40-man roster.

Grullón, 25, hit .283 (115-407) with 24 doubles, 21 homers and 77 RBI in 108 games with Lehigh Valley (AAA) of the International League in 2019. He was a mid-season Eastern League All-Star in 2018 with Reading (AA) when he hit .273 (89-326) with 14 doubles, 21 homers and 59 RBI in 90 games. The 5-11, 240-pounder also won the 2018 Eastern League All-Star Game home run derby.

Grullón has played five major league games between the Phillies and Red Sox from 2019-2020, going 2-12 (.167) with one double and two RBI. He spent the majority of last summer at the Phillies alternate site before he was claimed by Boston on September 3. He appeared in one game before he was optioned to Boston’s alternate site on September 8.

Grullón went to Spring Training with Cincinnati this year before he was claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay on April 6. He was designated for assignment by the Rays on April 24.
