SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced the return of their annual Padres Alumni softball game with their upcoming game versus the Marine Corps Recruit Depot All-Stars to take place on Wednesday, September 15 on Beeson Field at MCRD San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with notable Padres Alumni participants to include Trevor Hoffman, Steve Finley, Carlos Hernandez, Nick Hundley, Mark Loretta, Randy Jones and many more. The MCRD All-Stars will be comprised of a team of 21 Marines and one Sailor assigned to MCRD.
Rules for the six-inning game will include the use of a designated hitter, a pitch ceiling of 10 feet and a five-run maximum per inning. Each team will be led by an Honorary Manager with the Padres Alumni being managed by former big leaguer and Padres hitting coach, Merv Rettenmund. The MCRD All-Stars will be managed by Mike Magro, USMC Master Sergeant Retired and current DoD personnel, and captained by Master Sergeant Jim Quintero and Master Sergeant Chris Nieves. Padres public address announcer Alex Miniak will also be on-hand to provide live play-by-play commentary of the game. Service members on base, along with their families, will be treated to food provided by Hodad’s, kids activities, ticket giveaways, live entertainment and a meet and greet with members of the Padres Alumni team. The event is closed to the public and only open to base personnel and their families.
The softball game on Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego will serve as the sixth Padres Alumni softball game after a brief hiatus in 2020. Previous events have taken place at Naval Base San Diego (2017, 2019), MCRD San Diego (2017), MCAS Miramar (2018) and Naval Air Station North Island (2018).
