SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced plans surrounding Hispanic Heritage Weekend presented by Blue Shield of California beginning Friday, September 22 and running through Sunday, September 24. The Padres will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month over the course of their three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals culminating on Sunday with a postgame concert featuring the return of Los Tucanes de Tijuana.
The celebration starts on Friday, September 22 with Fiesta in the Park presented by Verizon prior to the game between the Padres and Cardinals that night. Beginning at 4:00 p.m., fans will be able to enjoy a pregame fiesta featuring Latin music along with food and drink specials in Gallagher Square. The party will run through first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. and will also include other entertainment elements. Jaime Munguia, Tijuana native and Current WBC Silver Super Middleweight/five-time WBO Super Welterweight Champion, will throw the Ceremonial First Pitch on Friday. The Padres will also don their highly popular City Connect uniforms on the field that evening, celebrating the binational community in which we live.
The Padres will also announce the recipients of the 12th annual Comunidad Awards presented by COX during Friday’s pregame ceremonies, which recognize and pay tribute to individuals or organizations whose work has made a positive impact on those who live and work in San Diego’s Hispanic community. The 2023 recipients and charitable organizations receiving $2,500 from the Padres Foundation and $2,500 from Cox in their honor include Dr. Jose Honold (donation benefitting Rady Children’s Hospital), Josephine Talamantez (donation benefitting the Chicano Park Museum & Cultural Center), Chuy Nunez (donation benefitting the Monarch School), Susy Villegas (donation benefitting EJE Academies), and Dr. Beatriz Villareal (donation benefitting the Mano a Mano Foundation).
The festivities continue on Saturday, September 23 when Rey Mysterio, WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Class of 2023 and current WWE United States Champion, will throw the Ceremonial First Pitch prior to that night’s game against the Cardinals. Following the game, fans will be treated to a special firework display presented by Northgate Market set to the tune of popular Latin musical artists. The weekend wraps on Sunday, September 24 with the final KidsFest of the season presented by SDGE. The family friendly event will feature a Hispanic Heritage theme while offering games, airbrush tattoo artists, balloon artists and other activities beginning two and a half hours prior to first pitch at 1:10 p.m. Following the conclusion of the Padres vs. Cardinals, fans who purchase a special Theme Game package will be treated to a postgame concert featuring Los Tucanes de Tijuana presented by Coca-Cola beginning approximately 30 minutes after the final out of the game. Expected to sell out, a special theme game package for Sunday is required for admission to the postgame concert and can be purchased at www.padres.com/tucanes.
