Phillies acquire Yunior Marte from Giants

The Phillies have acquired right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Marte, 27, split last season between triple-A Sacramento and the Giants, which included his major league debut. He began the year with Sacramento, where he was 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA (9 ER, 25.2 IP), nine walks, 35 strikeouts and a 0.70 WHIP in 25 appearances. For the Giants, the Dominican Republic native worked in 39 games over six stints with the club and went 1-1 with a 5.44 ERA (29 ER, 48.0 IP), 22 walks and 44 strikeouts. To end the season, he posted a 1.93 ERA (2 ER, 9.1 IP) and a .152 opponents’ batting average (5-33) over his final eight games for San Francisco.

According to Statcast data, among all major league pitchers, Marte finished in the 94th percentile in average fastball velocity (97.8 MPH) and his barrel percentage (3.5%) was in the 97th percentile.

Marte was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals as an amateur free agent on July 19, 2012. Over his minor league career between Royals and Giants affiliates, he has gone 30-34 with a 3.79 ERA and 568 strikeouts over 567.2 innings in 260 games (37 starts). He has worked exclusively as a reliever since the beginning of the 2018 season.

Miller, 24, was a fourth-round selection of the Phillies in the 2019 MLB Draft. For his professional career (2019-22), he has gone 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA (27 ER, 97.0 IP) in 48 games (19 starts).
