Phillies hire Dickerson as infield coach

October 25th, 2021

Bobby Dickerson has been hired by the Phillies as infield coach for the 2022 major league coaching staff, the club announced today.

“Bobby was highly recommended by our players who worked with him in 2019, they loved him,” said Phillies Manager Joe Girardi. “I saw firsthand the impact he had on the Orioles’ defense all those years and I believe he will be a huge addition to our staff.”

Dickerson, 56, rejoins the Phillies, where he served as infield coach in 2019. He spent the last two seasons with the San Diego Padres, where he was the club’s bench coach in 2020 before having third base coaching responsibilities added prior to the 2021 season.

Over the past two years with Dickerson on staff, the Padres infield (1B, 2B, SS, 3B) combined for 34 defensive runs saved per FanGraphs, which ranked third out of all 15 National League clubs behind only the Colorado Rockies (73 DRS) and St. Louis Cardinals (41 DRS). Per Statcast data, the Padres infield combined for 30 outs above average from 2020-21, which ranked third in the National League and fourth in MLB behind only the Cardinals (43), New York Mets (32) and Kansas City Royals (32). Dickerson was named 2020 MLB Coach of the Year by Baseball America.

Prior to his time in Philadelphia in 2019, Dickerson spent 14 seasons (1993-97; 2010-18) with the Baltimore Orioles, first in player development (1993-97; 2010-12) and later as third base coach (2013-18). He also spent eight years on the Chicago Cubs player development staff (2002-09) and four years on the Arizona Diamondbacks player development staff (1998-2001).

A native of Laurel, Miss., Dickerson was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 23rd round of the 1987 draft. He played parts of seven minor league seasons with the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.
