Phillies reinstate Ranger Suárez from 15-day IL; option Luis Ortiz to Triple-A Lehigh Valley

May 13th, 2023

Prior to tonight’s game against the Colorado Rockies, the Phillies recalled left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez from his rehab assignment with triple-A Lehigh Valley and reinstated him from the 15-day injured list (left elbow strain). To make room for Suárez on the 26-man roster, right-hander Luis Ortiz was optioned to Lehigh Valley following last night’s game against the Rockies.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Suárez, 27, went 1-0 and pitched to a 1.00 ERA (1 ER, 9.0 IP) with five strikeouts and two walks across three rehab starts between Lehigh Valley and double-A Reading. He posted a 0.78 WHIP and held opponents to a .167 (5-30) average.

Last season, Suárez set career highs in wins (10), innings pitched (155.1), strikeouts (129) and starts (29) in his first full season as a starter. He became the only Phillie ever to earn a win as a starter and a save as a reliever in the same postseason. His save came in Game 5 of the NLCS to clinch the pennant.

Suárez was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on April 1, 2012.

Ortiz, 27, posted a 2.70 ERA (3 ER, 10.0 IP) across eight relief appearances for the Phillies.  He had 10 strikeouts to three walks and permitted only two extra-base hits, both doubles, to the 42 batters he faced (.316 OPP SLG).

Originally selected in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers, Ortiz was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.
