Pirates partner with Allegheny Health Network to honor local healthcare workers at PNC Park

Doctors, Nurses and Hospital Staff Invited to PNC Park for a Special Day on the Field

June 6th, 2020

Today, the Pirates teamed-up with Allegheny Health Network (AHN) to honor doctors, nurses and hospital staff at PNC Park as part of a special AHN Heroes Day.

Representing the thousands of front-line healthcare workers who serve our community, the Pirates invited several AHN employees and their families to enjoy a unique on-field experience at PNC Park. The group included three doctors, four registered nurses and three staff members from the Allegheny Health Network family.

These 10 men and women were honored throughout PNC Park as banners adorning their photos lined the outside façade of the ballpark. These banners will stay on the exterior of PNC Park for the remainder of 2020 as a tribute to our front-line heroes.

Once inside, the guests were led to the field for a family photo opportunity. While on the field, they were treated to a special AHN Heroes Take the Field program, as the Pirates announced each as a member of the day’s “lineup” utilizing the in-house public address system, while also displaying the guest’s image on the main video board in left field. Each guest was then surprised by personalized messages from Pirates Manager Derek Shelton and players such as Joe Musgrove, Jameson Taillon, Adam Frazier, Kyle Crick, Trevor Williams and more. Each personalized video welcomed the heroes individually and thanked them and all of the employees at AHN for the important role they are playing to keep our community healthy and safe.

Following the Take the Field program, all guests were treated to a picnic lunch on the outfield grass, courtesy of the Pirates concessionaire partner Aramark.

“The men and women we honored today were here representing the thousands of healthcare workers at AHN who pledge to keep us safe,” said Pirates President Travis Williams. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we have focused on doing everything we can to support our front-line workers and our community as whole. While I wish we could have every AHN employee out to the ballpark, it was an honor to thank these healthcare professionals personally and hopefully give them and their families a memory they will never forget.”

For more than 20 seasons, AHN has served as the Pirates official medical provider. The leading physicians of AHN’s Orthopedic Institute oversee the comprehensive sports medicine needs of the team’s players and staff.

“We greatly appreciate the Pirates organization for taking the time today to recognize some of our front-line employees in such a special way, and for their generous support over the last several months of everyone at AHN and Highmark Health who have been working hard to meet the needs of patients and communities during this challenging time,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, AHN president and CEO.

All guests were properly screened upon entering PNC Park by the Pirates professional training staff and the Pirates coordinated all efforts to ensure social distancing measures were followed throughout the day.
