Pirates announce Fan Experience Enhancements to PNC Park

Improvements Focused on Speed of Lines, Quality of Food Offerings and Flow of Main Concourse

March 23rd, 2023

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced a number of enhancements to PNC Park for the upcoming season. The enhancements, which will be unveiled to fans at the Pirates Home Opener on Friday, April 7, are part of the continued evolution to the fan experience at PNC Park.

The Pirates will utilize state-of-the-art Evolv screening technology at each of the ballpark’s gates, which will  simplify and speed up the entry processes. The system will use powerful sensor technology with artificial intelligence to provide safer, more accurate threat detection without always having to stop or open bags. The
system will also reduce long lines and allow guests to make their way directly into the ballpark.

Once inside, fans will experience a variety of changes aimed at improving the speed of service, quality of the food offerings and opening up the flow of the main concourse.

The Pirates, in partnership with ARAMARK, will debut a family-friendly, walk-in market along the first base side, a walk-in Fan Favorites Express on the third base side and several new walk-through beer markets. These new concepts will allow fans to walk into the markets and grab their favorite food and beverage items with ease, which will ease congestion on the main concourse. Each new concept also will feature touchless self-checkout Mashgin kiosks with no bar codes and no wait that will enable fans to quickly self-checkout, thus expediting the process.

“As we continue to evolve the Best Ballpark in America, our goal is to build upon what makes PNC Park so special and provide an exciting and memorable game-day experience for our fans,” said Pirates President Travis Williams. “The improvements to our main concourse come after discussions with the fans. They want more of the popular items made at a high quality and served as quickly as possible so that they can get back to their seats and enjoy the baseball game. These upgrades to improve entry into the ballpark, flow of the concourse and speed of service are a direct result of their feedback. We cannot wait to invite them back to PNC Park for the 2023 MLB season and see them enjoy these improvements.”

Additional technology upgrades include the expansion of self-ordering kiosk systems to service food stands throughout Pops’ Plaza. The systems will allow for fans to place their order at multiple stands in one transaction, thus avoiding lines and improving wait times. The Pirates also installed all new concession stand equipment, condiment carts and digital menu signage throughout the main concourse to enhance the quality of the food offerings and the speed of which they can be served.

In addition, the Pirates will install new drink rails and condiment carts and remove several portables to help with reducing the congestion and enhancing the sight lines throughout the ballpark. New Pirates historical branding will also be featured throughout the main concourse, allowing fans to further explore the history of Pirates baseball and create photo memories of their visit. Earlier this offseason, the Pirates announced additional improvement projects for 2023, including a new LED
scoreboard, fascia ribbon boards and in-park sound system.

The Pirates are planning to unveil all of the above and more at their annual “What’s New at PNC Park” media event on April 4. Details will be announced in the coming days.
