Pirates sign Bryan Reynolds to long-term contract extension

April 26th, 2023

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed outfielder Bryan Reynolds to a contract through the 2030 season with a club option for 2031.

The 28-year-old Reynolds has helped the Pirates get off to their best start since 1992, hitting .294 overall with five doubles, one triple, five home runs, 18 RBI and an .872 OPS in his first 22 games. Coming into today, Reynolds ranks second among all National League outfielders in RBI (18), tied for second in home runs (five), fourth in slugging (.560) and 10th in OPS (.882).

Throughout this process, one thing that I always made clear to Bryan was just how much we appreciate him as a player and person, and how important he is to our future success” said Pirates Chairman of the Board Bob Nutting. “Today is another important step forward for our organization. I appreciate Bryan, his wife Blair, and our shared commitment to the long-term success of the Pirates.”

Reynolds made his Major League debut on April 20, 2019, after being acquired by the Pirates organization on January 15, 2018.

Since the beginning of the 2019 season, Reynolds has recorded 240 RBI as an outfielder, which ranks third in the National League at that position. Reynolds also ranks eighth in OPS (.844) and slugging (.486), seventh in OBP (.359) and second in total bases (858) behind Juan Soto (923) among National League outfielders in that time.

“We are thrilled to reach this agreement with Bryan. He is a player we trust on and off the field,” said Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington. “This agreement is an important step toward our shared goal of building a championship team in Pittsburgh.”

In 2021, Reynolds was named to the National League All-Star team, starting in the Midsummer Classic while finishing the season fourth in the National League in OBP (.390), sixth in hits (169), seventh in batting (.302) and doubles (35), tied for ninth in total bases (292), while also sharing the Major League lead in triples. One year later, the switch-hitting Reynolds led all National League center fielders in home runs (24), was the organization’s Heart and Hustle Award winner, and a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award.
