The Pittsburgh Pirates today agreed to terms on a minor league contract with catcher Tony Wolters, which includes an invitation to big league camp.
The 28-year-old Wolters ranked fifth among National League catchers in starts (35) and ninth in innings caught (283.2) while spending the entire 2020 season with Colorado, where he hit .230 (23-for-100) with four doubles and eight RBI in a total of 42 games.
During the 2019 season, Wolters ranked third among all National League backstops with 20 caught stealings. He also compiled a 106-game errorless streak from August 16, 2018 to August 19, 2019, the second-longest by a Rockies catcher in club history.
The left-handed hitting Wolters established career highs during the 2019 season in games (121), runs scored (42), hits (94), doubles (17), RBI (42) and batting average (.262) while also being named the recipient of Colorado’s MLB Players Alumni Association Heart and Hustle Award.
Wolters was originally selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft before being claimed off waivers by Colorado on February 18, 2016.
