Rangers place 3B Josh Jung on 10-day injured list, recall INF Justin Foscue from Triple-A Round Rock

The 25-year-old Foscue will be seeking his Major League debut

April 2nd, 2024

Tampa Bay — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field:

  • Third baseman Josh Jung placed on 10-day Injured List with right wrist fracture.
  • Infielder Justin Foscue (#56) recalled from Round Rock (AAA).

Jung, 26, exited Monday night’s game at Tampa Bay after being struck on his right wrist by a pitch from Phil Maton in the top of the 9th inning. He had gone 7-for-17 (.412) with 2 home runs, one triple, one double, and 6 RBI in 4 games for Texas this season, ending play yesterday ranked among A.L. leaders in OPS (4th, 1.415), slugging pct. (5th, .941), and total bases (7th, 16). The 2023 American League All-Star selection missed most of spring camp after suffering a low-grade left calf strain while taking groundballs on the backfields of the Rangers’ complex in Surprise in February.

A product of Texas Tech University, the former 8th overall selection (2019) has produced a career slash line of .260/.307/.472/.772 (154-593) with 30 home runs and 90 RBI in 152 games since debuting with the Rangers in 2022.

Foscue, 25, will be available for tonight’s contest, seeking his Major League debut. The infielder has started each of Triple-A Round Rock’s first 3 games of the 2024 campaign, going 3-for-13 (.231) with 2 RBI and 2 walks/4 strikeouts. He has appeared defensively at second base (2 games/starts) and first base (one game/start), last seeing action in the Express’ 8-6 victory on Sunday vs. Sugar Land (0-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, R, SO).

Foscue slashed .250/.315/.396/.711 (12-48) with one home run, 4 doubles, 6 RBI, and 2 walks/14 strikeouts across 21 games/12 starts for Texas this spring before he was optioned to Triple-A on March 28. He was added to the Rangers’ 40-man roster on November 14, 2023 after batting .266/.394/.468/.862 with 18 home runs, 84 RBI, and more walks (85) than strikeouts (70) over a career-high 122 games at Round Rock last season.

The right-handed batter and thrower entered 2024 ranked among the top prospects in Texas farm system by Baseball America (no. 4), MLB Pipeline (no. 5), and Baseball Prospectus (no. 6). He was also touted for being the ‘Best Hitter for Average’ in the organization according to Baseball America’s annual ‘Best Tools’ survey of the club’s top farmhands.

The Huntsville, Ala. native owns a career .276/.380/.499/.878 slash line, 50 home runs, 81 doubles, and 216 RBI over 285 games in the minors, ranking among Rangers minor leaguers over that span (min. 750 PA) in doubles (1st), OPS (3rd), RBI (3rd), on-base pct. (4th), slugging pct. (4th), and home runs (6th).

Foscue was originally selected by Texas in the first round (14th overall) of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State University. He and college teammate Jordan Westburg, who was chosen by Baltimore with the 30th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, were just the second pair of Mississippi State teammates ever to be selected in the first round of the MLB Draft in the same year, joining Will Clark (2nd, SF) and Rafael Palmeiro (22nd, CHC) in 1985.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Carson Coleman, Jacob deGrom, and Tyler Mahle) on the 60-day Injured List.
