Minneapolis, MN—The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed infielder Brock Holt on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 3, with a right hamstring strain.

To replace Holt on the active roster, Texas has selected the contract of infielder Andy Ibanez from Triple-A West Round Rock. Ibanez (#77) was on the taxi squad for this roadtrip. He will be looking to make his Major League debut.

To make room for Ibanez on the 40-man roster, catcher Sam Huff has been transferred from the 10 to the 60-day injured list.

Holt, who has been bothered by hamstring tightness for the last few weeks, aggravated the injury during last weekend’s series with Boston. He is batting .250 with 5 RBI in 15 games/14 starts at third base in his first season with Texas.

Ibanez, 28, has been on the Rangers’ taxi squad for the last three roadtrips in 2021. The righthanded batter, who plays primarily at second and third base, was 4-for-16 in four games at Texas’ Alternate Training Site. He was a non-roster invitee in the Rangers Major League spring training camp with a slash line of .295/.326/.477/.803 (13-44) with one HR, one 3B, 2 RBI, and 5 runs scored. In 24 games.

This is his sixth season with the Texas organization after signing as an non-drafted free agent in July 2015. Ibanez played three seasons in Serie Nacional, Cuba’s top professional league, before signing with the Rangers. He spent 2020 at the team’s Alternate Training Site in Arlington.

Huff was placed on the 10-day IL on April 1 with a left hamstring strain. He injured his right knee during minor league training camp in April and underwent surgery to remove a loose body of cartilage from the knee on April 28.

With today’s moves, Texas’ Major League roster remains at 40 players with pitchers Matt Bush, Jonathan Hernandez, and Jose Leclerc and infielder Ronald Guzman joining Huff on the 60-day IL.

KOHEI ARIHARA UPDATE: RHP Kohei Arihara played catch on Tuesday at Target Field and reported no pain in his right middle finger. Arihara had an injection in the finger on Saturday to relieve soreness in the tissue under the skin. He will not start on what was his regularly scheduled day on Wednesday but will throw a bullpen on Thursday. If Arihara comes through that session with no discomfort, he is tentatively scheduled to start on Saturday against Seattle at Globe Life Field. Arihara is 2-3, 5.76 in six starts with Texas in his first season with the club.
