March 15th, 2022

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm to a one-year contract for the 2022 season.

The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Strahm, 30, owns a 3.81 ERA (110 ER/260.0 IP) in 157 career appearances (25 starts) for the Kansas City Royals (2016-17) and San Diego Padres (2018-21). The left-hander spent most of last season on the injured list due to right patellar tendon repair and right knee inflammation, making six appearances for the Padres. Originally selected by the Royals in the 21st round of the 2012 June Draft out of Neosho County Community College (KS), the North Dakota native has made at least 40 appearances twice during his career, including a career-high 46 (16 starts) for the Padres in 2019. Strahm has recorded an ERA below 3.00 in three seasons, doing so as a rookie in 2016 (1.23) and again in 2018 (2.05) and 2020 (2.61). He made his Postseason debut with the Padres in 2020, appearing in four games between the Wild Card Series and Division Series.
