Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox recalled left-handed pitcher Bobby Poyner and right-handed pitchers Colten Brewer, Trevor Kelley, and Mike Shawaryn from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Poyner, 26, has made three appearances over two stints with Boston this season. The left-hander also pitched in 43 games for Pawtucket in 2019, posting a 3.77 ERA (24 ER/57.1 IP) with 26 scoreless outings. Selected by the Red Sox in the 14th round of the 2014 June Draft, Poyner made his major league debut in 2018 and has gone 1-0 with a 5.13 ERA (15 ER/26.1 IP) in 23 career appearances with the club. He has held major league left-handed hitters to a .250 batting average (7-for-28), zero home runs, and two walks against seven strikeouts.

Brewer, 26, made the Red Sox’ Opening Day roster and has appeared in 48 games for Boston this season, posting a 4.31 ERA (23 ER/48.0 IP) with 44 strikeouts. In his last 27 major league outings (beginning June 6), the right-hander has a 2.88 ERA (8 ER/25.0 IP) with 21 scoreless appearances in that time. Brewer has held major league left-handed hitters to a .233 batting average (17-for-73) and a .711 OPS this season, having allowed only five extra-base hits. Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the 2011 June Draft, he was acquired by Boston from San Diego in November 2018.

Kelley, 25, made his major league debut this season, pitching the ninth inning in the Red Sox’ 10-6 win at Toronto on July 2, his lone appearance with Boston. The right-hander was named an International League mid-season and post-season All-Star in 2019. He led the league in appearances (52) and tied for the lead in saves (12), going 5-5 with a 1.79 ERA (13 ER/65.1 IP), 63 strikeouts, a 1.10 WHIP, and a .216 opponent batting average. Left-handed hitters this season batted only .096 (9-for-94) with a .380 OPS against Kelley, who was selected by Boston in the 36th round of the 2015 June Draft out of the University of North Carolina.

Shawaryn, 24, pitched in eight games during his stint with Boston in June, the first of his major league career. He made five consecutive scoreless appearances from June 8-18, striking out 11 batters over 8.0 innings during that span. The right-hander also made 26 appearances (14 starts) for Pawtucket in 2019, posting a 2.57 ERA (6 ER/21.0 IP) in his last six outings (four starts) with the club. Selected by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2016 June Draft, Shawaryn is 18-20 with a 3.79 ERA (164 ER/389.1 IP) in 84 minor league appearances (71 starts).
