Red Sox claim right-handed pitcher Max Castillo off waivers from Kansas City Royals

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today claimed right-handed pitcher Max Castillo off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. The club’s 40-man roster is now at 40.

Castillo, 24, pitched in seven games for the Royals in 2023, recording a 4.43 ERA (10 ER/20.1 IP). The right-hander also posted a 4.58 ERA (59 ER/116.0 IP) in 22 games (21 starts) with Triple-A Omaha last season. Signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2015, the Venezuela native owns a 5.43 ERA (36 ER/59.2 IP) in 21 career Major League games (six starts) with Toronto (2022) and Kansas City (2022-23). Castillo has pitched this winter for Cardenales de Lara of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, going 5-0 with a 2.72 ERA (15 ER/49.2 IP) in 11 games (nine starts).
