Red Sox announce roster moves, Aug. 4, 2019

BRONX, NY – Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

Left-handed pitcher David Price was reinstated from the paternity leave list.

Right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Right-handed pitchers Colten Brewer and Josh Smith and infielder Marco Hernández were optioned to Pawtucket following last night’s game.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Price, 33, was placed on the paternity leave list prior to Friday’s series opener against the Yankees. The left-hander is 7-4 with a 3.86 ERA (44 ER/102.2 IP) in 20 starts for Boston this season. He reached 10 years of major league service time earlier this season and earned his 150th career win on July 7 at Detroit, as he is 150-79 (.655) with a 3.28 ERA (739 ER/2,025.0 IP) in 319 career appearances (309 starts) with Tampa Bay (2008-14), Detroit (2014-15), Toronto (2015), and Boston (2016-19). In 101 regular season outings with the Red Sox (96 starts), Price is 46-23 (.667) with a 3.76 ERA (244 ER/583.1 IP). He also earned three wins in the 2018 Postseason, including in the clinching games of the American League Championship Series and World Series.

Weber, 28, has appeared in eight games (three starts) with Boston this season, going 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA (14 ER/24.0 IP). The right-hander has also made 13 starts with Pawtucket, and in his last six he has posted a 1.64 ERA (6 ER/33.0 IP). He most recently pitched Wednesday at Syracuse and threw six shutout innings, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts. Acquired by Boston as a minor league free agent in December 2018, Weber has made 32 major league appearances (11 starts) with the Braves (2015-16), Mariners (2017), Rays (2018), and Red Sox (2019), going 2-6 with a 5.07 ERA (55 ER/97.2 IP) and an average of only 1.57 walks per 9.0 innings.

Brewer, 26, made the Red Sox’ Opening Day roster and has appeared in 48 games for Boston this season, posting a 4.31 ERA (23 ER/48.0 IP) with 44 strikeouts. In his last 27 outings (beginning June 6), the right-hander has a 2.88 ERA (8 ER/25.0 IP) with 21 scoreless appearances in that time. Brewer has held major league left-handed hitters to a .233 batting average (17-for-73) and a .711 OPS this season, having allowed only five extra-base hits. Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the 2011 June Draft, he was acquired by Boston from San Diego in November 2018.

Smith, 31, has made 11 appearances (two starts) over five major league stints with Boston this season, going 0-2 with one save and a 4.84 ERA (12 ER/22.1 IP). In the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader, the right-hander allowed only one run in four innings of relief. He has also pitched in 11 games (10 starts) for Pawtucket and gone 5-2 with a 5.09 ERA (33 ER/58.1 IP). Since making his major league debut in 2015 with Cincinnati, Smith has made 78 appearances (11 starts) for the Reds (2015-16), Athletics (2017), and Red Sox (2019), posting a 5.23 ERA (87 ER/149.2 IP).

Hernández, 26, has hit .333 (22-for-66) with two home runs in 29 major league games this season, with all 13 of his starts coming at second base. He has also hit .333 (37-for-111) in 29 games for Pawtucket this season, adding 10 doubles and two home runs. Acquired from the Cubs in 2014, Hernández has played in 90 career games for Boston, batting .303 (53-for-175) while making 20 starts at second base, 15 at third base, and six at shortstop. He missed the majority of the 2017 season and all of 2018 recovering from left shoulder surgery.
