Ryan Mountcastle, Patrick Wisdom named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet

Luis Urías Makes diving snag to claim Play of the Week

Rookie first baseman/outfielder Ryan Mountcastle of the Baltimore Orioles has been chosen the American League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet, and rookie third baseman Patrick Wisdom of the Chicago Cubs has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Mountcastle earned his first career AL Player of the Week Award and is Baltimore’s second winner this season, following his All-Star teammate John Means (May 10th) . Wisdom similarly claimed his first career weekly award and is the second Cubs player this year to accomplish the feat, joining his All-Star teammate Kris Bryant (May 3rd).

• Batted .458 (11-for-24) with seven runs scored, three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.083 slugging percentage over six games played.
• Recorded at least one hit in every game during his outstanding week, including four multi-hit efforts.
• Homered in three straight games from Wednesday-Saturday for the first time in his career. Became the first Orioles rookie to accomplish the feat since Jonathan Schoop in September 2014.
• Enters play today having recorded at least one extra-base hit and RBI in six consecutive games dating back to May 31st, tied for the second-longest streak in franchise history. Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson holds the Club mark with seven such games from July 17-23, 1976.
• Became the first Orioles player to log at least 11 hits, seven extra-base hits and 10 RBI in a six-game span since his teammate Trey Mancini in September 2019.

Patrick Wisdom, Chicago Cubs (@pwizzy_5)

• Batted .435 (10-for-23) with a double, six home runs, nine RBI, one stolen base and a 1.261 slugging percentage across seven games.
• Began his award-winning week in grand fashion, registering his first career multi-home run game last Monday against the San Diego Padres. Recorded his second career multi-homer game in yesterday’s matinee against the San Francisco Giants.
• Became the first Cubs player to deliver at least six round-trippers and nine RBI during a seven-game stretch since his teammate Ian Happ last year in September.
• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, became the third player in Major League history to hit seven-or-more home runs in his first eight starts with a Club, joining Aristides Aquino (2019) and Trevor Story (2016). In addition, his seven homers match Donnie Murphy (2013) for the most in a player’s first 15 games for the Cubs.

Other noteworthy AL performances for the week included Ryan’s teammate Cedric Mullins (.542, 7 R, 13 H, 6 XBH, .607 OBP), who reached base in 11 consecutive plate appearances and hit safely in nine straight at-bats from Friday-Sunday; rookie backstop Eric Haase (.438, 6 R, 5 HR, 7 RBI) and All-Star second baseman Jonathan Schoop (.417, 3 2B, 4 HR, 9 RBI) of the Detroit Tigers; All-Star outfielder Austin Meadows (.333, 7 R, 3 HR, 12 RBI) and starting pitcher Rich Hill (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 10.0 IP, 5 H) of the Tampa Bay Rays; rookie starter Luis Garcia (2-0, 1.38 ERA, 13.0 IP, 14 SO) of the Houston Astros; and outfielder Andrew Benintendi (.375, 9 H, 4 XBH, 11 RBI) of the Kansas City Royals.

Other noteworthy NL performances last week included All-Star starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 19 SO, 1 BB) of the New York Mets; All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen (.500, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI) of the Philadelphia Phillies; All-Star outfielder Juan Soto (.348, 7 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI) of the Washington Nationals; starter Corbin Burnes (1-0, 0.69 ERA, 20 SO, 2 BB) of the Milwaukee Brewers; starter Wade Miley (1-0, 0.82 ERA, 11.0 IP, 14 SO) of the Cincinnati Reds; and All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies (.393, 11 H, 6 2B, 10 RBI) of the Atlanta Braves.

Infielder Luis Urías of the Milwaukee Brewers earned his first career Play of the Week award and is the second Brewers winner this season, following his All-Star teammate Jackie Bradley Jr. (May 17th). With one out in the top of the seventh inning of Friday’s contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Urías ranged to his right to make a diving catch up the middle that kept Freddy Peralta’s no-hit bid alive. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Ozzie Albies’ spin-throw and A.J. Minter’s diving catch to retire Josh Bell at first base; Adam Engel’s home run-robbing catch; Fernando Tatis Jr.’s slick snag in the hole and strong throw over to first base; and Clint Frazier’s diving catch in shallow right field.

Dr. Mara Windsor from Phoenix, AZ
Dr. Mara Windsor is a celebrated physician, mother, philanthropist and advocate for wellness who has been on the frontline of the pandemic since it began—not only treating COVID-19 patients, but also finding ways to support her fellow frontline heroes. Her nonprofit, L.I.F.E. (Living in Fulfilled Enlightenment), has given support to frontline workers, provided virtual wellness crisis support, and hosted health-focused events and lectures to help boost the wellbeing of the community during this difficult time.

Tamara Black from Tampa Bay, FL
Tamara took over the as executive director at the FEAST Food Pantry in Palm Harbor as the pandemic started. In this role, she implemented significant changes to overcome the challenges the pandemic created, including serving two times as many clients as before the pandemic. She restructured the delivery system (introducing contactless delivery), and coordinated additional food drives to meet the increased need for donations.
