Shriners Children’s College Classic returns next weekend

The 22nd annual tournament features four ranked teams, including No. 1 Texas and No. 2 LSU

HOUSTON, TX — Tickets for the Shriners Children’s College Classic, which will be held at Minute Maid Park next weekend (March 4-6), are available for purchase at Astros.com/CollegeClassic. The 22nd annual three-day, nine-game tournament will feature a star-studded field in Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and UCLA. Per Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, four of the participating teams are ranked: Texas (#1), LSU (#2), Tennessee (#18) and UCLA (#21).

The University of Texas entered the year as the preseason No. 1 team in the country and has gone on to post a 5-0 record thus far in 2022, while outscoring their opponents 53-7. Incredibly, this marks the eighth time in Shriners Children’s College Classic history that the tournament will host the preseason No. 1 team in the country.

Overall, the Shriners Children’s College Classic has hosted over 33 programs in its 22-year history and has seen a multitude of future Major Leaguers participate. Additionally, the tournament typically attracts close to 100 professional scouts from all 30 Major League teams.

The 2022 tournament marks the seventh year for it to carry the name Shriners Children’s College Classic, which has been set forth by a multi-year naming rights agreement between the Astros Foundation and Shriners Children’s®. The Astros Foundation operates the tournament and will donate a portion of each ticket sale directly to Shriners Children’s as well as provide other fundraising and awareness opportunities.

HOW TO WATCH AND STREAM

As one of the most accessible college baseball tournament in the country, all nine games of the tournament will be televised regionally by AT&T SportsNet SW and streamed nationally on Astros.com, the Astros Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts, and the MLB app. AT&T SportsNet SW is available in the Astros five-state viewing area. Subscribers to AT&T SportsNet SW can also stream all nine games live on the AT&T SportsNet app. Fans are asked to check local listings for more information.

THE FIRST PITCH LUNCHEON

The Astros Foundation will celebrate the start of the 2022 Shriners Children’s College Classic at the First Pitch Luncheon held on Thursday, March 3, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The luncheon is a ticketed event for fans, but will also be open to working media on a limited basis. One-on-one interviews with coaches will begin at approx. 1 p.m. and can be coordinated through the team SIDs.

The program, which will be held in the Union Station lobby, will be emceed by former Astros broadcaster Bill Brown and by Shriners Hospitals for Children patient Alec. Five of the six coaches from the participating schools will be in attendance, including LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson, Oklahoma Head Coach Skip Johnson, Texas Head Coach David Pierce, Baylor Head Coach Steve Rodriguez and UCLA Head Coach John Savage.
