Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have designated left-handed pitcher Danny Coulombe for release or assignment, selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Juan Minaya and added left-handed pitcher Lewis Thorpe as today’s 29th man for the doubleheader in Detroit.
Coulombe, who had his contract selected by the Twins on Saturday, appeared in two games this week, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings with two hits allowed, three walks and three strikeouts.
Minaya was signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent on January 23 and added to their player pool earlier this month. Last season, he appeared in 22 games for Chicago-AL, posting a 3.90 ERA (27.2 IP, 12 ER) with 12 walks, 27 strikeouts, a 1.55 WHIP and a .277 opponent batting average (31-for-112). The 29-year-old from Loma De Cabrera, Dominican Republic debuted in 2016 for the White Sox and pitched four seasons with Chicago from 2016-19, going 6-4 with a 3.93 ERA (128.1 IP, 56 ER), 10 saves, 66 walks, 142 strikeouts, a 1.43 WHIP and a .242 opponent batting average (118-for-488) in 125 relief appearances. He was originally signed by Houston as an undrafted free agent in 2008.
Thorpe, who is on the road trip as part of the Twins’ Taxi Squad, will be added as the club’s 29th man for today’s doubleheader at Comerica Park. The 24-year-old has pitched in six games (one start) for the Twins this season, going 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA (14.2 IP, 10 ER), nine walks and nine strikeouts.
