Twins select contract of Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul

NEW YORK, NY – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul and recalled him as the 29th man for today’s doubleheader with the New York Yankees.

Varland, 24, has made four starts for Triple-A St. Paul, going 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA (21.1 IP, 4 ER), three walks, 27 strikeouts, one home run allowed and a .192 opponent batting average. He began the season with Double-A Wichita and appeared in 20 games (19 starts), going 7-4 with a 3.34 ERA (105.0 IP, 39 ER), 39 walks and 119 strikeouts, earning a promotion to the Saints on August 8. Varland has been named Twins minor league Pitcher of the Week on four separate occasions this season (June 12, July 3, August 14 and August 28).

The St. Paul, Minnesota native was named the Jim Rantz Award winner in 2021 as Twins minor league Pitcher of the Year, after going 10-4 with a 2.10 ERA (103.0 IP, 24 ER), 30 walks, 142 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP in 20 games (18 starts) between Low-A Fort Myers and High-A Cedar Rapids. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander was selected by the Twins in the 15th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota and has a career minor league record of 18-10 with a 2.61 ERA (238.0 IP, 69 ER), 76 walks, 298 strikeouts and a 1.19 WHIP in 47 games (42 starts).

The North St. Paul High School graduate is scheduled to make the start in game one of today’s doubleheader in New York against the Yankees and will become the eighth Minnesota-born pitcher to make a start for the Twins, first since Cole De Vries in 2013.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Twins have designated right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell for release or assignment.
