White Sox acquire pitcher Prelander Berroa, outfielder Zach DeLoach and Draft pick from Seattle in exchange for pitcher Gregory Santos; designate Lane Ramsey for assignment

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Prelander Berroa, outfielder Zach DeLoach and a Competitive Balance B selection (No. 69 overall) in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-hander Gregory Santos.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated right-hander Lane Ramsey for assignment.

Berroa, 23, is rated by Baseball America as the No. 12 prospect in the Mariners organization and possessing the Best Slider. He spent most of the 2023 season with Class AA Arkansas, going 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA (21 ER/65.1 IP), 101 strikeouts (13.9 per 9.0 IP) and a .189 (45-238) opponents average in 43 games (five starts). Berroa recorded a 1.69 ERA (8 ER/42.2 IP) after being moved to the bullpen on May 10.

Berroa, a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, also made his major-league debut with Seattle, throwing 1.2 scoreless IP in two relief appearances.

Berroa, 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, is 21-12 with a 3.58 ERA (149 ER/374.2 IP) and 498 strikeouts (12.0 per 9.0 IP) in 124 games (77 starts) over six minor-league seasons. He was named Northwest League Pitcher of the Year in 2022 while splitting the season between Class A Eugene (San Francisco) and Class A Everett (Mariners) and Texas League Pitcher of the Month for August 2022 with Arkansas.

Berroa originally was signed by Minnesota as an international free agent on July 2, 2016. He was traded by the Twins to San Francisco as part of a four-player deal on July 31, 2019 and by the Giants to Seattle in exchange for infielder Donovan Walton on May 11, 2022.

DeLoach, 25, is rated by Baseball America as the No. 14 prospect in the Seattle system. He spent the 2023 season with Class AAA Tacoma, hitting .286/.387/.481 (151-528) with 30 doubles, two triples, 23 home runs, 88 RBI, 90 runs scored and 83 walks over 138 games.

DeLoach, 6-foot and 205 pounds, ranked among the Pacific Coast League leaders in hits (2nd), walks (4th), home runs (T6th), doubles (7th), RBI (T9th) and OPS (11th, .868). He recorded five hits on May 21 at Alburquerque, drove in five runs on August 8 vs. Oklahoma City and homered twice on August 9 vs. Oklahoma City.

DeLoach is a career .275/.377/.455 (379-1,380) hitter with 78 doubles, nine triples, 51 home runs, 220 RBI and 253 runs scored in 359 games over three minor-league seasons after being selected by the Mariners in the second round of the 2020 draft out of Texas A&M University.

Ramsey, 27, went 1-0 with a 5.85 ERA (13 ER/20.0 IP) and 18 strikeouts in 21 appearances in 2023, his first MLB season. He also made 32 appearances with Class AAA Charlotte.

Santos, 24, went 2-2 with a 3.39 ERA (25 ER/66.1 IP), five saves and 66 strikeouts in 60 relief appearances last season, his first with the White Sox after being acquired from San Francisco on December 22, 2022.

The White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40. The Sox now own the No. 5, 43 and 69 picks in the 2024 draft.
