CHICAGO – Prior to today’s home opener vs. Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox placed outfielder Billy Hamilton on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, purchased the contract of outfielder Nick Williams from the Schaumburg training facility and transferred left-handed pitcher Jace Fry to the 60-day injured list.

Williams, 27, signed with the White Sox as a minor-league free agent on January 12 and was a non-roster invitee to spring training. He hit .300 (12-40) with four doubles, one home run and two RBI in 24 Cactus League games this season. Williams, who bats and throws left-handed, did not appear in a major-league game last season after splitting time between the Philadelphia and Cincinnati organizations.

A native of Galveston, Texas, Williams is a career .254 hitter (210-826) with 30 doubles, 31 home runs, 110 RBI and 56 walks in 290 games with the Phillies (2017-19). He established career highs in home runs (17) and RBI (50) in 140 games with Philadelphia in 2018. Williams originally was selected by Texas in the second round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. He will wear uniform No. 5.

Hamilton, 31, left yesterday’s game at Seattle in the fifth inning with left hamstring tightness. He is 3-11 (.273) with one RBI in six games with the White Sox.

Fry, 28, was placed on the injured list on April 1 (retroactive to March 29) to continue his recovery from a microdiscectomy in the offseason.
