Louisville Slugger®, the Official Bat of Major League Baseball®, announced the 2017 Silver Slugger Awards tonight as two members of the Cleveland Indians, SS FRANCISCO LINDOR and 3B JOSÉ RAMĺREZ, were among eight first-time recipients. Five teams recorded multiple winners (HOU, MIA, COL, NYY).
Lindor, 23, enjoyed a tremendous season, collecting career-highs in almost every offensive category in just his second full season at the Major League level, earning his second straight All-Star bid and setting a single-season franchise record for home runs by a shortstop (33). For the season, he batted .273 (178-651) with 44 doubles, 4 triples, 33 home runs and 89 RBI in 159 games. He ranked 3rd in the American League in extra-base hits (81), 4th in doubles and total bases (329), 7th in hits and 9th in runs (99). His home run and extra-base hit totals were club records for a middle infielder and the most by a Major League shortstop in ten seasons (2007).
The home run total (33) was an MLB record by a switch-hitting shortstop, besting Jimmy Rollins (30, 2007) and Jose Valentin (30 in 2004). Francisco joined Hal Trosky (42 in 1936 and 35 in '34) and Manny Ramirez (31 in 1995) as the only Indians players 23-or-younger to have at least 30 homers in a season and was the first shortstop, 23-or-younger, to enjoy a 30-homer campaign since 1999 (Alex Rodriguez). Lindor is the second Indians shortstop in win a Silver Slugger, joining Asdrubal Cabrera (2011).
Ramίrez, 25, enjoyed one of the finest offensive seasons in Indians history, joining Grady Sizemore (2006) as the only Indians batter with at least 100 runs scored, 50 doubles, 25 home runs and 15 stolen bases within the same campaign, earning his first American League All-Star selection while finishing in the top 10 in MLB in bWAR (6.9, 7th), extra-base hits (T1st), doubles (1st) and total bases (5th). His extra-base hits (91) and doubles (56) totals each ranked in the top 5 in a single-season in the 117-year history of the franchise, the extra-base hits being second-most ever by a switch-hitter in MLB history (Lance Berkman 94 in 2001).
Ramίrez was the first Indians infielder since Al Rosen in 1953 (75) to lead the A.L. in extra-base hits, the most by an Indians infielder since 1B Hal Trosky's 96 in 1936. His season in a nutshell came on Sept. 3 at Detroit, tying the Major League record for extra-base hits in a game with five. The versatile infielder's .957 OPS was the highest among A.L. players who appeared in at least 80 games at third base and the season OPS was the highest in MLB history among players who appeared in at least 60 games at both second (71 games) and third base (88 games) within the same season. He is the third Silver Slugger winner in club history among third basemen, joining Jim Thome (1996) and Matt Williams (1997).
