The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has activated right-handed pitcher Keone Kela from the 10-day disabled list. To make room on the active roster for Kela, infielder Pete Kozma has been designated for assignment.
Kela was placed on the disabled list on July 3, retroactive to June 30, with right shoulder soreness. He has thrown multiple bullpens on this road trip and did not have an injury rehabilitation assignment. Kela last pitched on June 27 at Cleveland.
Kela has gone 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA (9 ER/30.2 IP) in 30 relief appearances for Texas this season, including 9.0 scoreless innings over his last 9 games beginning June 10. He ranks among American League relief leaders in opponents average (4th, .133) and opponents OPS (6th, .473).
Kozma batted .111 with a home run and 2 RBI in 28 games/9 starts with Texas after being received from the New York Yankees in an April 30 waiver claim. The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Kozma to the minor leagues.
With today's moves, the Rangers now have 38 players on the club's major league roster.
