The Texas Rangers today announced that outfielder-first baseman Peter O'Brien has been received on a waiver claim from the Cincinnati Reds and has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.
To make room for O'Brien on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross has been moved from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list.
O'Brien, 26, has split the 2017 season between Triple-A Omaha and Louisville in the Kansas City and Cincinnati organizations. He was acquired by the Royals from Arizona on January 3, 2017 and hit .162 with 3 homers and 6 RBI in 27 games for Omaha before being designated for assignment on May 10. The right-handed batter was claimed on waivers by Cincinnati on May 16 and went 4-for-20 with a homer and 2 RBI in 5 games at Louisville before being designated for assignment by the Reds on May 25.
O'Brien has a .176 average with 6 homers and 12 RBI in 36 career major league games, all with Arizona in 2015 and 2016. He was originally signed by the New York Yankees after being a second round selection in the 2012 First Year Player Draft. O'Brien was acquired by Arizona in 2014.
Ross, who will make his second start on rehab assignment on Monday for Round Rock, has spent the entire season on the disabled list as he continues to rehab from surgery to relieve Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in October 2016.
