The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed outfielder Delino DeShields on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. To take his place on the active roster, the team has recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Gardewine (#45) from Triple-A Round Rock.

DeShields continues to be evaluated and is expected to be sidelined for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. He suffered the hand injury during his plate appearance in the 7th inning of Friday night's game against Houston. He walked in that plate appearance and later scored, and he finished the game in center field. DeShields has started both Texas games in center field as the club's leadoff batter, going 1-for-7 with a walk in those 2 contests. The only other time he has been on the disabled list in his major league career came from June 15-July 5, 2015 with a left hamstring strain.

Gardewine, 24, made 12 relief appearances for the Rangers at the end of last season, posting a 5.63 ERA (8 R-5 ER/8.0 IP) with 7 walks and 3 strikeouts in his first major league action. He recorded a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) over 6 relief outings with Texas this spring, posting 3 walks against 6 strikeouts before he was optioned to Round Rock on March 16.

The Rangers still have a full 40-man roster along with 3 players on the 60-day disabled list.
