Seattle -- The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Bird (#55) from Triple-A Nashville. To make room for Bird on the active roster, the team has designated right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gómez for assignment.
Bird has no record and a 6.75 ERA (4 ER/5.1 IP) with one save in 5 games spanning two stints with the Rangers this season (Opening Day-March 31, April 5-17). His last major league appearance was on April 15 vs. LAA. Bird has spent the balance of this season with Triple-A Nashville, posting no record and a 2.70 ERA (4 ER/13.1 IP) with one save and 6 walks/18 strikeouts in 11 games for the Sounds. He last pitched on Friday vs. Memphis, striking out all 3 batters faced in a scoreless 8th inning. In his last 8 minor league outings, Bird has registered a 0.90 ERA (1 ER/10.0 IP).
Gómez went 1-0 with a 8.22 ERA (14 ER/15.1 IP) in 16 relief appearances for the Rangers this season. The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Gómez to the minor leagues.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers have 39 players on the major league roster, along with four players on the 60-day injured list: RHP Luke Farrell, OF Scott Heineman, LHP Yohander Méndez, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
